Parramatta Railway Station is the main station in Sydney's satellite city of Parramatta. It serves the Parramatta central business district and the surrounding area. The station lies on the Western railway line and is served by trains of the T1:North Shore, Northern & Western Line and T5:Cumberland Line on Sydney's Sydney Trains network, NSW TrainLink Intercity trains on the Blue Mountains Line and Country services operating between Sydney and Dubbo and Broken Hill.
Parramatta is the 4th most patronised railway station in Sydney (out of a total of 176 stations), with an average of 30,070 passengers boarding per day.
Parramatta station is one of Sydney's oldest. Sydney's first line connected Sydney and Parramatta Junction near Granville and opened on 26 September 1855. It was extended to the current Parramatta station on 4 July 1860.
The station was proposed to link to Chatswood via the Parramatta Rail link; however, with the demise of the link between Parramatta and Chatswood with the line cut to Epping, the station was given a major upgrade nonetheless. In late 2003 work began on a new transport interchange which linked the station to the neighbouring Westfield Parramatta, Sydney's largest shopping centre. The works included upgrading the station, providing more access to commuters, and constructing a new bus interchange. On 19 February 2006 the interchange was opened to the public.
